WIRLIX

Video debates and discussions  |  June 2020
UX /UI B2C Mobile App

Overview

Wirlix is a video-based mobile application designed to redefine the way people talk about current events.

The problem

63% of people say there are no content sources they can trust. In addition, 66% say internet media and content are dividing people.

The solution

Building a social group that provides people the chance to discuss today's most controversial topics with people who think differently and engage in healthy discussions.

Project Goal

Engage people to discuss and share thoughts about current events on a video-based social platform.

UX Research

Interviews revealed that people often struggle to communicate their beliefs effectively and tend to be surrounded by like-minded individuals, limiting exposure to diverse viewpoints. Many users feel that social media often fosters disrespect for differing opinions, creating echo chambers rather than encouraging healthy discussions.

During the discovery phase, I looked for the following:

  • Communication Barriers: Identify specific difficulties users face when trying to express their beliefs.

  • Respect for Diverse Opinions: Assess how users interact with those who have different views and the common challenges in maintaining respectful discourse.

  • Exposure to Diverse Viewpoints: Understand the extent to which users are exposed to and engage with people holding different beliefs.

  • Trust in Content: Evaluate the sources of content users trust and their reasons for distrust.

  • Impact of Social Media: Analyze the role of social media in shaping users' perceptions and interactions with others.

How did I have an impact?

Partnered with the founder and developers to design and launch a fully functional MVP, successfully positioning Wirlix for its market debut.

DESIGN PROCESS

Competitive Research

I tested competitor’s applications to learn the user preferences and strengthen my ability to gauge the efficacy of different design choices.

I spotted which features competitors have that users really like and where they’re lacking. Watching users complete basic tasks such as searching, navigating, and posting helped me discover pain points and frustration and avoid those mistakes when designing the Wirlix application.

Sketching

I sketched various design solutions to explore different layouts and concepts. Sharing these sketches with the team facilitated collaboration, ensuring a shared understanding and alignment throughout the project. This iterative process allowed us to refine ideas collectively and make informed design decisions from the outset to the final stages.

Wireframing

Based on my sketches, I developed a low-fidelity prototype to visualize the app's structure and layout. This process was instrumental in understanding the overall user flow and identifying initial usability pain points and friction areas. The prototype served as a valuable tool for early testing and refinement, allowing us to address potential issues before moving on to higher-fidelity designs.

Usability Testing

We tested out a few different versions of the application to validate design choices early on and help shape better experiences. This process discovered the user's strengths and weaknesses and guided me with future design decisions.
